The wreck of the Cartanser Senior is one of the most popular dive sites in St. Thomas, visited by scuba divers and snorkelers due to its well-protected location. The wreck is on the west side of Buck Island, which is less than a 30 minute boat ride from Charlotte Amalie's cruise ship terminal.
The Cartanser Senior, a 190-foot freighter, used to transport goods during World War II, served later as an inter-island freighter. It is still a mystery why the captain and his crew abandoned the ship, but legend has it that the merchandise transported might not have been altogether legal. The abandoned ship started to take on water and finally sank in the Gregerie Channel in St. Thomas harbor. Upon the request of local divers, the wreck was relocated to Buck Island, where hurricane Alan displaced the wreck one more time a few years later.
Today, the Cartanser Senior lies on its port side in 35 to 50 feet of water, its hull split into three sections. This dive is very easy for everyone who wants to explore ship wrecks but doesn't necessarily want to strap on "nitrox" tanks or descend to depths of over a hundred feet. Divers can swim through various, wide open parts of the wreck, as the openings allow very safe wreck diving conditions. The wreck now also serves as a feeding ground for numerous species of fish among them snappers, sergeant majors, and parrot fish, who seemingly enjoy their coral and sponge-encrusted home.
