Dive Safaris' friendly staff expected us already at the cruise ship terminal and the short boat ride to the Philipsburg dive base took less than 10 minutes. Sarcastically greeted as shark bait and introduced to Mark Atkinson, our "shark feeder of day", we received a "safe return" promising dive briefing before leaving for Big Mama's Reef. The ride was just long enough to get the camera equipment ready and off we went to go and dive with the sharks.
The descent and approach to the actual feeding ground was a little bit paranoidal. We couldn't see them, but we knew they were there. After passing over a couple of rock formations, we were placed behind bricks in the sandy bottom of the ocean, clearly marking the upcoming place of action. A safety diver constantly monitored our air consumption while Mark calmingly opened his box with bait in order to get the feast started.
Not even five minutes later, the first reef shark appeared, spinning his circles around the brave shark feeder and we started to understand, why Mark would compare these seemingly dangerous creatures to our so familiar dogs.
These 3 to 8-foot Caribbean Reef Sharks and Sharp Nose sharks were not too proud to bag and would gently touch Mark's knees and elbows, turning his feeding techniques into pure entertainment. Needless to say that our adrenalin rush was satisfied and the only desire not fulfilled, must have been grabbing a sharks' tail in order to go for a fun ride.
Should you spend your dive vacation in or around St. Maarten, make sure to schedule this very exciting and educating shark experience dive.
